By Will Hoeman

If you are looking for ways to increase your search engine placement, you are not alone, as many people want to do the same so that they can bring in greater numbers of money through targeted traffic increases. A general background that understands how the engines work is vital in helping to improve your ranking. Search engines are the main way that websites get traffic, and 60percent of that traffic comes from Google.

You'll need to have a good understanding of how search engine placement works though finding and presenting the relevant information to potential customers if you want to be successful. The most common way is through what is called a crawler or a spider, but a robot is also used sometimes.

Search engines utilize the spiders to index the websites. The spider indexes your sight by searching your pages after you submit your site. The spiders function by reading the content of your site, meta tags, and links on your pages. Your data will be indexed in a certain spot, and that is where the spider will bring them to. Any pages you link to will be indexed, as well. Some spiders only index a limited number of pages, so that could be a problem if you have site with hundreds of pages.

The spider does return frequently back to your site to see if there has been any updates or changes. The search engine moderators determine how frequently these returns happen. As a book would have a table of contents, content, and references, so does a spider have similar, with meta tags, content, and links. It is not uncommon for some spiders to have the ability to index over a million pages a day, and examples include Excite, Lycos, Alta Vista, and Google.

To get an improved search engine placement, whenever someone types in keyword into the search engine, the search engine actually finds the information that is closest to what the searcher is typing in their internal index. Since the search engines are not actually searching the Web, but rather the index, if a person types in "buy management book," and your website has that as a keyword according to the index, then your page will be in the first page of results. Depending on which search algorithm you use, you will come up with a different ranking on the different sites.

Another tip is to take note of your frequency and location of your keywords on your web page. Most people keep their keyword density around three to seven percent else it will be considered as keyword stuffing or spamdexing.

Also in their indexing, the search engines look at how links form and what the pages subject matter is about. If page links are related, then you will have improved search engine rankings. If you want to get a better search engine placement, you need to know exactly how the search engine placement works, and then use that as a tool to help your website get better placement.
