Finding Homeland Security

By Deniss Durrell

The term Homeland Security gets tossed around quite a bit, but there is quite a bit of confusion as to what it actually means.

By definition homeland security means a national endeavor to protect its lands and peoples from security threats.

Homeland security is probably most important in the United States specifically since the September 11th twin tower attacks.

In response to the attacks President Bush granted quite a bit of power to the director of Homeland Security. It was at that point that the United States Department of Homeland Security shot into the public eye.

The Department of Homeland Security is in charge of securing the nations safety from interior and exterior forces. Additionally the Department of Homeland Security is in charge of preparing for and responding to natural disasters.

It also has responsibility for preparedness, response, and recovery to natural disasters. Police, Fire Personnel, the FBI, and even Border security agents are under the umbrella of homeland security.

There has been some criticism of homeland security. Most of the criticism has circulated around the practices that the Department of Homeland Security has put into practice. There is even speculation internationally that some of these practices violate the United Nations Geneva Convention.
